Balance-based Torso Weighting

16.01.2015

At Neuromotion Physiotherapy, we are dedicated to learning about and using new and innovative approaches to helping people with Neurological conditions maintain and improve their functional independence. So when one of Hillary’s clients asked her to help him with adjusting his BalanceWear® vest, she was immediately intrigued. And after seeing the positive impact the newly adjusted vest had on her client’s balance, she decided this was a new treatment option she wanted to learn more about. She went to Seattle to take a course called “Balance-Based Torso-Weighting” taught by Cindy Horn, who is the physical therapist that developed this specialized weighted vest.

The vest helps with balance and equilibrium difficulties in people who have neurological conditions including stroke, brain injury, ataxia, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and more.  She was amazed at the instant mobility changes people had once fitted with the vest.

BalanceWear® enables “counter-balancing” of your body to overcome balance losses.  The therapist assess for directional instability. Once specific balance loses are identified, the therapist will place very light weights strategically at one or more locations on the trunk to change the stability of the trunk and counter-balance the body. When balance is improved, the body begins to move with more coordination and control.

There are three biological systems that control balance: The visual system, sensorial system and vestibular system. BalanceWear® provides important information to your sensory system which has the potential to make balance corrections and improve mobility. (Adapted from the BalanceWear® website)

Hillary Acosta is the first physiotherapist trained to assess and fit the BalanceWear® vest in Canada and we are lucky to have her as part of the Neuromotion Victoria team.  If you would like more information on the weighted vests, here is the link for the official BalanceWear®  website http://www.motiontherapeutics.com or you could contact the Victoria clinic and book an appointment.
