Marlene graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Alberta in 2012. In combination with her undergraduate studies, she also pursued a varsity athletic career in the sport of Rugby for 4 years. During the course of her degree, she also found relevant work experience through working as a care-giver at multiple care homes, a physiotherapist assistant at an orthopaedic clinic, and managing administration at a multidisciplinary health clinic.
Marlene’s initial passion for preventative healthcare came from her experience as a child/teenager with her aging grandparents. She drew upon their separate cardiopulmonary issues to learn more about the human body as well as develop her own holistic approach to exercise. After helping her grandmother with recovery from a triple bypass surgery, she worked towards an undergraduate in some form of health profession and found Kinesiology.
Upon finishing her degree, Marlene worked as a private one-on-one personal trainer at a high-end gym in downtown Edmonton with a focus on exercise as prevention. She worked there for 3 years until she decided to make the move to Victoria with playing high-level rugby as the main reason. In combination with personal training, she worked as a medical accident benefits adjuster for 2 years at a large insurance company which gave her expanded knowledge in overall medical claim management.
After arriving to Victoria in the fall of 2015, Marlene began working at Neuromotion Physiotherapy as Kinesiologist. Since then, she has obtained training in the Bobath concept for health care assistants, Lokomat – Robotic Gait Training, Functional Electrical Stimulation Ergometry, and a Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery Instructor certification at the PWR gym in Tucson, Arizona.
While working with clients, Marlene likes to place emphasis on client education along with biomechanical deficiency awareness of each individual’s body. This has also lead her to begin a Balance class in the clinic to increase the amount of time clients spend exercising during their week.
In Marlene’s spare time she likes keeping active through sport (whether it be rugby, running, biking, crossfit or snowboarding), spending time with her Labrador, Rogue, as well as traveling.
