What is hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy (or pool therapy) can be a very beneficial alternative to conventional treatment in the clinic on the mat or treadmill. The heated pool that we use to treat clients provides a very conducive environment for therapy. The amazing properties of water can be utilized in a variety of ways to meet the needs of the therapist and client. Buoyant forces provides a deweighting effect for ease of weight-bearing and walking when there isn’t enough strength to do so against gravity. The water can also provide resistance to active movement in order to improve muscle strength and control. The sensory stimulation from the heat and water can also have an effect on a recovering neurological system, plus it’s fun for kids!
How does it work?
Our therapists also benefit from working with clients in the pool because it can reduce the strain on the therapist, and also the deweighting effect of water can allow the therapist to move and stretch the client in ways that are not physically possible otherwise.
