There are many secondary complications involved with immobility following a spinal cord injury, and other neurological conditions. These include pressure sores, UTIs (urinary tract infections), osteoporosis, and joint contractures. Your physiotherapist can help to initiate the standing program that is most suitable for you.
Benefits of Standing Include:
- Improved circulation
- Improved respiratory function
- Improved skin condition
- Improved bladder and bowel function
- Improved bone health
- Improved joint range of motion
- Improved quality of life
Equipment is necessary to compensate for the loss of muscle control experienced following SCI. Support from an external structure to splint the lower limbs and trunk is needed to enable patients to adopt the upright posture of standing against gravity. This support can be in the form of a standing frame or tilt-table which remains in one place that can raise the patient into the vertical posture.
